He’s worked with Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan and all the greats. Enjoy an evening of conversation as Dr. Lewis Porter talks with the drummer known as "Snap Crackle."

The Jazz Ambassadors: Musicians & Cultural Diplomacy

Since the 1950s, jazz musicians have toured world-wide under the auspices of the United States government. What are the complexities of these situations? How does jazz represent the image that Americans want to project to the rest of the world? We’ll discuss the groundbreaking State Department tours of Louis Armstrong with author Penny Von Eschen and talk with musicians who have been involved with this program over the years.

Join the top three high school jazz bands in the country and guest soloist Wynton Marsalis as they brag in brass, reeds and swing. Not to be outdone, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra takes to the stage with a preview of next season’s Essentially Ellington repertoire.
