One Step Beyond featuring Eric Person and Bryan Carrott

World-renowned saxophonist Eric Person has spent decades composing, recording, and performing a broad range of contemporary jazz at the highest level. He has performed and recorded more than 50 records with greats like McCoy Tyner, Dave Holland, Chico Hamilton, John Hicks, Houston Person, Vernon Reid, Will Calhoun, and World Saxophone Quartet, and tonight he teams up with vibraphone and percussion virtuoso Bryann Carrott for their Dizzy’s Club co-headlining debut. After multiple appearances on DownBeat magazine’s Critics and Readers Polls, in 2015 he was named No. 1 Rising Star Vibraphonist. Mark Gross Quintet + Strings

Saxophonist Mark Gross consistently performs with the best musicians around, both as a headliner and in bands like the Jimmy Heath Big Band, John Pizzarelli Big Band, Mingus Big Band, Duke Ellington Orchestra, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. It takes soul and an unfailing commitment to swing—in a huge variety of musical settings—to play in groups like these, and it’s with that spirit that Gross approaches his own shows with strings. Enjoy one of the top saxophonists on the scene in this admirable integration of swinging small group jazz and bowed strings.

That's Not Tango

That's Not Tango is a one-person narrative show with very live music performed by four virtuoso musicians. It chronicles Piazzolla's life, that of an imaginative and restless spirit who betrayed practically everyone who loved him on his way to becoming one of the most celebrated composers in the world. And in the end, he asks himself the age-old question: Was the sacrifice worth the art?

Charenee Wade: Betty Carter at 90

Betty Carter blazed her own trail as one of the most original jazz vocalists of our time. Her flawless phrasing, unpredictability, and signature glissando placed her in a league of her own as a true “musician’s singer.” She was also one of jazz’s foremost mentors, and the elite “Jazz Ahead” program that she founded and led was a life-changing opportunity for rising star musicians—including tonight’s headlining vocalist, Charenee Wade. In celebration of what would have been Carter’s 90th birthday, Wade will interpret the music of one of her personal idols.
